Critique Contest: ALL Mediums!AboutIn my opinion, critique is commentary on art or literature aimed at giving direction for improvement, encouraging artistic growth, and promoting education. These three elements are vitally important to any artist, in any medium because they provide a cornerstone for advancement. On deviantART, we see entire communities dedicated exclusively to giving and receiving critique because artists of all levels understand the benefits of critique. February's Solutions Sanctuary project is focused on critique because many, many people complain that there just is not enough of it on dA. Well, time to put your keyboards where your mouths are, my fellow deviants! For this contest, I challenge you to give at least one other deviant a critique. You may use the critique feature or leave critiques in comments. You may critique work from a group, from your watchlist, from the
Publishing Resources ListMake sure you the news article! So you've written something freaking awesome. You've edited a million times (and if you haven't, turn around and go do that. Right now). You think you maybe want to take the leap and try publishing something. But you have no idea where to start.Well, this is a good place to be.This the journal where I'll be keeping a running list of all the publishing resources I find, both on and off dA. Most of it will probably be related to literary journals, since that's the stage where I'm at in my literary career, but I'll add things about book publishing as I find them.If you ever find a great resource, or if you'd like to request something specific, please leave me a note in the comments. Also this journal is probably going to be super-messy and slightly badly-categorized for the first few weeks, so if anything looks out of place and/or you can think of a better way for me to organize this, please

Breaking in to Lit!IntroductionLiterature has long been considered one of the closest knit communities on deviantART. As a result, some people find it difficult to "break in" to the Lit crowd. There are rumors of elitism, difficulty in getting exposure, and lack-luster appreciation for the incredible work that goes into writing a good piece of prose or a well structured poem.If you look at a painting you can see amazing detail, great use of color, and the importance of the subject immediately. You know it came from the artist's imagination and that he or she had to spend hours translating that to a canvas. The tangibility of the work is right in front of you. With writing, it is not quite the same. The effort the author puts into the work can only be appreciated if readers put in their own effort to read the work. The gratification is not instant, which is one reason the lit community is so close knit. Those who do have large followings often also comment and read quite a lot of work h

Expose-Lit: Tip Guide on Talking to PeopleHere at #Expose-Lit, we hope to give deviants opportunities to find their way within the Literature community. We all know what it is like to be “new,” to be out of the “loop,” or to wonder where to turn to for help. We also know how daunting it can be at times to feel comfortable talking to other deviants within the community. Below, you will find just a few helpful tips on how to get started.I’m New To DA Lit: Where Do I Start?Well, this is easier than you might think! The first thing you want to do is to get to know your Literature Community Volunteer Directors. ^Beccalicious, $wreckling and `thorns are here to listen and support you, so do not be afraid to ask questions and get to know them! PE: Literature Critique TipsAs part of Project Educate Critique week, the Community Volunteers would like to share more art specific elements to consider whilst giving good critique.Today we are looking at the Literature gallery, with our Top Tips. Before you start READ the piece all the way through. Read it again, making notes of what you would like to point out in your critique. Stay Objective- you are critiquing the piece not the person. The Tips! These tips are areas which aren't just necessary in critiquing others' work, but also when self-critiquing your own writing. This is one person's suggestions and I welcome any further tips in addition. A good opening. The opening to any form of writing doesn't necessarily need to involve a physical explosion, but it needs to have an initial hook; something to entice the reader in. It needs to be clear, something that
Demonstrably Deviant: Issue IAboutSometimes we meet members of DeviantART who are just plain cool. They leave critique, they make great art or write great stories, they participate in groups and are generally just active and fun to be around. They also don't get any attention because being cool means you don't need attention to keep being cool. This interview series is meant to give all of you a small glimpse into the minds of these demonstrably deviant members. Twice monthly, I'll interview one of these deviants and feature work from their gallery. If you'd like to see someone interviewed for this series, just shoot me a note with the subject "Demonstrably Deviant".~PaperDart: Reader, Critic, Philosopher ExtraordinaireHailing from South Africa, Charli is an avid reader, a prolific writer, and quite an interesting blogger.
